Mold on floor boards

Mold on floor boards

We'd rather dry it out for our customers so it doesn't become a mold problem - this is the optimal scenario for everyone involved! However fully half of our business is helping customers when mold has developed and grown. A lot of times customers, eager for a quick an easy solution, ask us: "Can't you just spray some stuff on it?" To our surprise, some competitors will tell them "Yes we can." It is important to note, however, that the guiding principle of a proper mold remediation is to REMOVE the mold, not kill the mold. "spraying some stuff on it" at best will kill the mold. However dead mold can possess toxic features. Beware of providers who tell you there's a quick an easy solution to mold remediation.

Hallway Main Floor Cavity

Hallway Main Floor Cavity

This house was a huge job as you can see from the picture attached the wall cavity had a huge mold problem. SERVPRO of Southwest Portland was able to meet the customers needs by eliminating the mold damage and restoring the home to a safe home for the family.

With any mold damage a concerns are more likely to arise for "at risk" people. Possible health effects include runny nose , sneezing , coughing aggravation of asthma, sore throat or inflammation of the sinuses.

Young children, immune suppressed or compromised individuals, people with inflammatory lung diseases such as asthma and severe allergies are the most at risk.

Mold inside the wall

Mold inside the wall

Water leakage caused the dormant mold spores to develop into large mold colonies along this wall. We demolished the lower two feet of the drywall after we sealed this part of the house to prevent the cross contamination of mold spores, fungi particles, and dust.

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Fungi produce some very useful results. Even through some forms of mold can add value to our lives , other forms can be harmful. Excessive amounts of mold, different types of mold exposure may present health concerns for some people.  After a day, we verified that the exposed area was back to normal moisture levels, so we then buttoned up the drywall and left the challenge of taping, finishing, and painting the wall to the homeowner as per his request.

Mold overtaking the basement

Mold overtaking the basement

This customer suffered a mold damage in their finished basement caused by overflowing toilet. The customer was away for summer and discovered the damage when they returned from an extended vacation.

Believe it or not, mold problems like this can be mitigated with the right expertise and equipment. SERVPRO has trained technicians that were able to test and remove the mold growth, and then restore the space to preloss conditions. The family was very grateful that we were able to recover their home and protect them from any potential health effects.

Every mold infestation is different, from the extent and type of growth, to the variety of materials affected. Each scenario requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same.
